mardi le 25 octobre 2016

Bonjour,

Important info for parents: Squash was canceled tomorrow because of a scheduling conflict at Cedar Hill Rec. We are rescheduling for November 15th. We also need to change the November 16th date because it falls on CC days so there is early dismissal. As soon as I have the final date I will send out an email to parents. Our current confirmed dates are:

Tuesday Nov. 1st
Tuesday Nov. 15th
Final date TBD

Devoirs:

Maths: We began prime and composite numbers today. Students were given several examples and some vocabulary definitions. There is also an explanation on the pink handout they received. I have asked students to complete questions 1-3 on the first page of the handout (we did an example of each question to help clarify what needs to be done).

Anglais: Students who are not yet finished their final two poems now need to complete them at home (they were due today). We began some descriptive writing and I have asked students to transform four different sentences given in class (most finished the first three during class). It would be great if students would do two versions of each sentence (add descriptive words) to show the kind of difference adding precise/descriptive words can make to a sentence.

Don't forget about the food drive : )

A few students are still not finished the draft of their poems...if that is you, make sure you get caught up tonight and maybe stay in at lunch tomorrow in the library to work on them.

SURVEY: A survey went home today asking how students get to and from school (from Saanich). This is in order to potentially improve services for students in terms of city planning. First class to get all the surveys in wins a prize!

PE: Bring PE strip tomorrow for gym class

Photo retakes tomorrow afternoon!

Terry Fox Run tomorrow and end of Cops for Cancer Fundraiser

Devoirs:

Anglais: DRAFT ONLY of diamond poem due Monday. Please have a rough draft of your diamond poem complete.

For those still struggling with this concept, please do a minimum of two questions a day as extra practice. Make up the questions (e..g 425,68 x 24), check with a calculator and redo the question if you get it wrong.

Questions to ask yourself if your answer is incorrect:

Did you put down a zero before multiplying your second digit? Did you carry your tens properly or did you skip a number? Did you make a multiplication or adding error? Did you line up your columns properly so you can easily see what numbers you need to add together to get your final answer? Did you put the decimal in the right spot?

Math is like a second language, you will only get better and more confident by DOING it! Repetition, repetition, repetition : )!

mardi le 13 septembre 2016

Bonjour,

Just a reminder to please ensure you have PE strip for Monday.

Also, we are getting started on our academic subjects now and it is very important that students have their binder with subject dividers as soon as possible so that handouts can go with the appropriate subjects. Organization becomes very important as students have more than one teacher for academic subjects and need to be able to easily find their assignments.

Immunization forms can be submitted to Carol in the office along with the other forms that were sent home this Monday (permission forms, parent contact information etc.).

Anglais: Students should be finished Pages 1 & 2 from our review (how to use a dictionary, capitalization in English).

Maths: Look over vocabulary review. We will be doing our diagnostic math assessment over the next couple of days to see where students are at as we start up the year.

Lundi le 12 septembre 2016

Bonjour,

Hello and welcome to my class blog. This is a space where I post information for students and parents regarding upcoming due dates for assignments and projects as well as reminders for upcoming events at the school (e.g. picture day, field trips, forms that are due etc.).

Although classes and assignments are in French I usually post on the blog in English to ensure that parents also understand.

Today I will be handing out my introduction letter to students and will have them put the blog address on the handout. I really encourage the students to take it upon themselves to check the blog daily.

Devoirs:

Students will be getting a large info package today with forms that parents need to check over for accuracy and update (information regarding residence and phone numbers). There are some other forms as well. Students are to return the forms TO THE OFFICE at their earliest convenience.

Students will be needing to bring their supplies in the next couple of days (one binder with subject dividers, pencils, pens, felts, pencil crayons, scissors, calculator and geometry set, lined paper, erasers).

Students will also need to bring PE strip including a change of shorts or stretchy leggings/sweat pants, a change of shirt, gym shoes and deodorant (may not be needed now but usually necessary by the end of the year). Please no heavily scented deodorants or any spray deodorants. We have PE Monday and Tuesday and Fitness studio on Fridays. Please ensure that students have their PE strip for next Monday's PE class at the latest.

Parents should be getting their "assignment" today (Tell me all about your child in a million words or less). The more I know about each student, the better able I am to meet their learning needs and help them feel at home in the class and at school. I really appreciate any information that parents are willing to share with me.

Have a great afternoon!

Bonjour,

PE: Bring your PE strip for Monday's gym class.

Fral: Message from Mme O'Connor:
If you would like to submit your French "écrire pour un meillure monde" story to the competition by World Literacy Canada, go to: http://www.worldlit.ca/canada-programs/write-for-a-better-world/write2016/ and scroll right down to the bottom of the page. There is a link called "Submit online" that will take you to a google doc where you can copy and paste your story. They have extended the deadline to be April 25, so you still have time to revise your work if needed to make sure you have a focus on being a global citizen (they define this as someone who is empathetic, or understanding of others, respectful, and aware of different cultures). You'll need to include my name and email address: koconnor@sd61.bc.ca, and a parent or guardian's name. Good luck!

Maths: Advisory 43 & 44: If you did not complete the math homework from Tuesday (equivalent fractions and reducing fractions) ensure it is finished for Monday. Also, if you are planning on doing a retest for two-digit long division, ensure you review daily by completing at least two problems (you can make them up and check with a calculator) and be ready to do a re-test for next Thursday. Don't forget to watch the video link I posted on Tuesday's blog.

Sciences Humaines: 1)Your Map of Europe with the path of Syrian Refugees should have been handed in today Thursday. If you did not finish have it finished for Monday's class.

Maths: Please complete review activity on equivalent fractions (all questions). Remember to show all your work (e.g. if you multiply the numerator by 4 and the denominator by 4 write x 4 beside each of them before writing your answer).

Note: For those still struggling with double digit long division, keep doing practice questions to improve fluency. There is a video that explains in English what I have been talking about and demonstrating in class. Be careful though...it is in English so they put a comma to separate thousands from hundreds but in French that would be a space! When you write a comma, it means you are going from units to tenths. Confusing? Tell me about it : )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdU_rf7eMTI

Anglais: Tell your parents about the documents you examined today. Was it a photo? a letter? a legal document? What was it about? Who wrote it and why?

Bonjour,

Don't forget about the parent assignment (Tell me all about your child in a million words or less) which can be completed on the handout I provided or in an email (mcouture@sd61.bc.ca).

Maths: Just a reminder to think of a large number (minimum tens of millions with at least four digits) to use for your large number poster which you will be working on for the next couple of math blocks. (I will provide paper). The goal of this activity is to solidify understanding of the vocabulary we have learned relating to large numbers and to practice writing large numbers in their three forms (forme symbolique, forme décomposée et forme en lettres).

PE: Remember that you need PE strip on Mondays and Tuesdays (and Fridays). That includes a change of clothes (t-shirt and shorts/sweatpants/yoga pants) and running shoes.

Welcome to Advisory 43's new blog

Bonjour,

Just wanted to welcome you to Advisory 43's new blog where I will post updates Mon. Tues. and Thurs. on assignments and give student reminders on upcoming events at Lansdowne. Because parents may want to access the blog I will communicate in English. The goal, however, is for students to use this resource independently to ensure they are prepared for class.

Passez une bonne journée,

Mme Couture
